Tragedy at Narita Airport

Posted by Akasan On March - 30 - 2009

On Monday 23rd a FedEx cargo plane crash-landed and bursted into flames today at Narita International Airport, killing the two US crew members aboard and causing huge flight disruption at Japan’s largest international hub.

A total of 35 flights, mostly international and including those heading to New York, had been canceled and 18 arriving flights were rerouted to other airports.

Some of our early departing customers and Intermixi staff (whom weren’t able to venture with the KHK extension package) were caught up in the ordeal.

Here’s some cellphone pics taken from Intermixi staff member Kim the site:

[The airport] told us at first that we would leave at 7pm instead of 3:15pm and there was jut a delay. Then they said they didnt know when we would leave and they didn’t get us a hotel room because “it’s not our fault they crashed.”

So now we are stuck, the four of us in Narita Airport with nothing to do and stores starting to close. Then out of no where Japanese news team to the rescue! They came in with sleeping bags, bottled water and what looked like space crackers! We so loved them and it just showed they cared about us, and didnt want us to leave.

So after we settled down with our water and space crackers, Kim goes to smoke upstairs and runs into a Osaka dance team smoking already. She gets the talking Mike shows up and they want to hear music. He busts out the ipod and starts dropping different tracks and they want to dance!

So I was downstairs still with Gloria and Kim calls us up to party with them. So ended up turning the smoking lounge into a club. Which just turned out to be a awesome night.

We all turned in pretty late and eventually it came time to leave Narita and back to reality. Our flight left at 12 but we never really left.

Yup, that right… Watch Intermixers team up with a fairly known Osaka dance group to make light of a really bad situation.

This can only happen with Intermixi.

Neotokyo Spring Tour 2009 Update: Live Blogging and Pictures!

Posted by American Kira On March - 22 - 2009

We are on our way to Kansai! The Kame Hame Kansai Extension begins!

Here is what been going on thus far:

Here’s a blog from Katherine Schuh (Los Angeles, CA)

Japan is amazing! I love this new culture, new place, but old habbits die hard…

I was proud of myself the first night. My first meal was ramen….something not American…but the last two nights I`ve eaten Mc Donalds…Tonight I ate Subway…Yea…I Know…

Also, I have decided that Disneyland is no longer the Happiest most Magical Place on Earth…The Ghibli Museum is.

Tokyo Anime Fair totally kicked the pants off of Anime Expo in the free stuff category.

If I had to live in Japan I would live in Odaiba.

Akihabara is Magic. I can`t wait to go back to do some shopping :)

One More day in Tokyo. Tomorrow I am on a mission to find Baby the Stars Shine Bright. Wish me luck!

Group Bloggin: The weekend before the big trip

Posted by American Kira On March - 16 - 2009

We asked some of our Intermixers to record the events of their Intermixi experience before, during and after the tour.

Here’s what the past weekend was like for them:
Gloria Aglugub
My name is Gloria Aglugub, and I am the lucky Jyukai winner from 2008 Anime Expo.
When I first won, I was shocked! So many things ran through my mind, and I was extremely happy. I
never won anything this big before.  I wanted to thank the Intermixi Tour for a thrillion times for giving this rare opportunity to me. Hence, I am excited!

To prepare for the trip, a few weeks ago I had to obtain a passport. Over the weekend, I
started arranging my clothes, bought a few manga books to read over the flight, and slept most of the
time since I have a cold. However, I am feeling a lot better because the days of anticipation is almost over
of going to Japan.

On my mind, I am so curious on who I am going to meet, what I am I going to see, and how would
the atmosphere be like in Japan. My future goals included visiting Japan, but I did not think it was going to
come a lot sooner. I am nervous, shy, excited, anxious, and mostly psyched!! I cannot wait to see Tokyo,
Osaka, the shops, monuments, the food, the people, and everything else.

I expect to have a lot of fun, grasp on new experiences, meet amazing people on the tour. I really
do not know what to expect, but I am sure the trip will be better than anything I have ever experienced.
This once in a lifetime trip will definitely be unforgettable.

Today was to be my big day for packing… but there is a leak in my master bathroom and the plumbers have been in and out since 9:00 a.m. with the water shut off, so I can’t leave to run errands; I can’t wash some of the clothes I need to pack; I can’t get into the bathroom to pack the toiletries I need for the trip… well, you see my dilema here, right?  I’m hoping this evening and tomorrow will turn out better!  Otherwise, just SO excited about the trip!

My age: basically anything suitable for a 2-5 year old (like the Hello Kitty DVD’s at the video store) I would enjoy.  Now put those two numbers together and subtract three, and that’s my age.  I’m completely obsessive.  My suitcase was packed two weeks ago after a shopping spree for necessities at Walmart.   Now I’m trying to get my sister caught up but she’s lagging it (and she’s going to find that there’s not much room left in her suitcase for her because my stuff has overflowed into hers).  I even packed my own food because I am the pickiest eater that you will ever meet.  But you see, the packing two weeks ago wasn’t an accident, it was completely planned for the fact that right now, instead of typing this to you, I should be studying for any one of my four finals in the next two days.  Yes, four.  Three tomorrow (History, Economics, Managerial Statistics) and one on Tuesday (Psychology).  Now, you may ask, why a final on Tuesday?  We have to be at the airport at 10am Tuesday.  Yes, I am making the ultimate sacrifice of getting my lazy butt up at the butt crack of dawn to take my final at 6 am.  Now THAT, my friends, is dedication.

What I expect from this trip?  Hm….well, shopping.  I plan to come back with at least two handbags that no body will ever be able to find here in the US. Maybe shirts, maybe shoes, who knows?  It is my goal to have every (what I call)  “Scarlett Johanson moment” from Lost in Translation that I can possibly have.  I would say that I would want to go party and get drunk, but in reallity, if I do that, then I’m going to miss out on a large part of enjoyment on the trip, plus I promised my boyfriend I wouldn’t.  I brought my cat ears to wear to the Tokyo Anime Fair (because that is the most cosplaying I can comfortably do).  I am hoping for my Hello Kitty collection to become rediculously large while still managing to comply to the luggage weight standards of the airline.  And random vending machines.  Food, drink, toys, underwear, I will be buying it.  I want to drink in the culture, study the fashion in Harajuku, shop at Shibuya 109, see the lights of Tokyo fly by me.

Come Wednesday, my friends, our dreams will come true.  Every day will be an adventure, lets have the time of our lives, let go, live, and forget about the things that hold us back.

Preparing for Japan, again =)

I know, I’m going again, but when you experience Japan once, you realize how much more there is to it. So I’m going back to the beautiful, lively, and amazing Japan. This time, not only are we going through Tokyo, but also Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe.

When I prepare for any trip involving luggage, I draw out every outfit, day-by-day, in a sketchbook, and list every item to be packed. I also make a small list of what’s needed, not to out of norm, but something I do. I be sure to get my hair and nails done, yea I know, how girly of me =P But hey, I like to feel mentally and physically ready when traveling.

This round, I’m determined to pack less, to there for take home more =) I’m doing the whole “One Suitcase in a larger suitcase”, which someone on the forums last tour said to do, sorry I forgot who. I did this last time, but I also had taken more than necessary other luggage. So I made it a mission to find travel size versions of all my bathroom, beauty, and grooming needs. I also made sure to reuse certain articles of clothing, such as pants, shoes, and PJs. That way there isn’t as much clothes and such to take and still, therefore, more to take home =D

I was overwhelmed last trip because me and my fiancé, Diego, collect figurines as a huge hobby, but when we found the Kotobukiya store, we were TORN. I was at the verge of tears because of how badly I wanted to take almost everything home, but had nowhere near the space to do so >,< But I soothed the pain with a few small ones for both me and Diego. By the way, we now have close to 300 figurines, all still nicely boxed until we get a home to dedicate a room to their displays.

Here’s the setup for the last few days:

March 13th, Friday: Lucky day =P, but just got some general needs from CVS, Proactiv, and some black slippers(for no real reason, just liked them).

March 14th, Saturday: 9am got hair color retouched and hair cut. Bought more travel sized needs.  Washed all clothes for the trip. Started to organize luggage items.

March 15th, Sunday: Got Pedicure Manicure, bought more general needs, called credit cards for notice of Yen transactions, and some more organizing of luggage.

March 16th, Monday:  Last minute shopping for general items (code word for clothes), gathering everyone to my sister’s, Angelica, house so that we all leave together, and final organizing of clothes.

Now all through the night, Me, Diego, Angelica and her friend Hydie, while prepping for the trip, will be playing RockBand All Night Long, because we got ourselves a good size band =P

Course, I could always map out what I’ll be doing each day were in Japan, but I’ll let my curiosity guide me. Only things I’m gonna try to do or see are: A Geisha house, a Shrine Maiden, a Bath house, and F’ing adorable children. I also have a list of gifts to get for friends =) That’s what Harajuku is all about.
